Border & Beyond

Duration : 1hr 35 minutes.

Coping with the pain and trauma after the Gujarat riots
The recent happenings in Gujarat have left many of us shocked and concerned with the future of this country. Persecution in the name of religion is a scary thought, especially when one realizes that India has so many religions and religious sects. Tomorrow it could be you or me.

As a human being and as a human being and as Indians, what happened in Gujarat affected us a great deal. At first we reached the State only to interact and talk to the people. Two weeks later we were back, this time with our camera and small crew who shared the same concern.

We spent a total of seven days traveling in the cities of Ahmedabad and Baroda. Our journey took us into remote villages and districts, places where most media people have never been. Places that need to be seen and sentiments that need to be heard.

The film is a personal diary of what we saw and what we heard. It speaks of people who are hurt and are unsure of tomorrow. It asks what is the next step? It wonders if anybody has even given it a thought. It questions us as people, and our role in the future of our country as a secular one.

The name Borders & Beyond, stems from the harsh reality that the word border has become an integral part of the people of Gujarat. Border in their minds is a clear demarcation between a Muslim and Hindu settlement. This word is unheard of anywhere else in India, except to identify a boundary between two States or countries.

The affected people are Muslims, and the film concentrates on their views, fears and apprehensions of a future that seems very bleak in their eyes and thoughts.

Borders & Beyond has been made solely because we felt the need to do something to help. We thought that by making this film, we will be able to reach out to a wider section of society who still believe that the victims are faking it or worse still, that they deserve it. We hope that the people watching this film might change their views and show a little intelligence and compassion.

The film has been shot on digital video, using a PD150 digital camera.
